WE ALMOST DIED IN HANA – Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls, Haleakala National Park

By November 22, 2017 5 Comments

In November, 2017, Ben and Julia went for a hike on the Pipiwai Trail to see Waimoku Falls in the Haleakala National Park in Hana and were almost hit by a rock that fell from the falls. In this video, we show you the beauty of the Pipiwai Trail and Haimoku Falls, as well as the dangers of crossing the warning signs. Although we didn’t catch the rock falling on video, you can hear it smash down and hear our freak out.

We got lucky and are thankful to be alive. Please learn from our mistake. We had visited the falls before when the water wasn’t as strong and you were allowed to cross the boundary and even stand under the waterfall, but things have changed. Don’t do it! You might not make it out alive.

  • Don’t forget to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you every day. We are lucky to be alive. Don’t be stupid like us.

  • Wow!! That’s crazy… and also extremely scary. So glad you guys are OK! ❤️❤️ #grateful

  • Ben my matey, glad ye didn't end up in Davy Jones locker by the hand of the waterfall goddess! We pirates be a bit of a superstitious bunch but we think she was either trying to kill you or give you a great souvenir for visiting the falls to show on Youtube. She be a fickle goddess! Dead men tell no tales so be mindful of the warning signs that ye come across as ye explore. If ye see goddess Pele, let her know this pirate deeply appreciates her gifts of volcanic rocks that me sister brought back from the dominion of her fire palace. Your videos are making this pirate want to cross that place off the bucket list so very badly! Stay safe!

Thank you for posting this. I live on Maui, and I see this kind of thing happen all the time to unsuspecting tourists. It's nice that there are warning signs all along the hike, but it would be even nicer if permanent stories like this could be posted along the way. The signs do state "fatalities," but they do not state how those fatalities have occurred. To me, that gives a little extra permission to those who think "it'll never happen to me" when they don't have any idea of knowing that "it" is. Glad you made it out safely. Pipiwai is a gorgeous hike.
