BEST STOPS ON THE ROAD TO HANA – BAMBOO FOREST, 400 FT WATERFALL, BLACK SAND BEACH – MAUI, HAWAII

By March 12, 2017 2 Comments

The Road to Hana lived up to the hype! There is something to see around every turn – and man, were there ever a lot of turns (over 600 hairpin turns to be exact!!).

We took a family trip to Kihei in Maui, Hawaii in March 2017, and made the drive in two parts. We did the first part with our 8 month old baby and my parents, checking off family friendly activities; the second part, my husband & I did, going off to do the more adventurous/ not as family friendly things to do.

Highlights: shopping in the cute surf town Paia; exploring nature at Twin Falls; seeing the turtles who come to shore every afternoon at Ho‘okipa; the caves and Black Sand Beach at Waianapanapa State Park; and the 400 foot waterfall, Waimoku Falls, and the calming Bamboo Forest on the Pipiwai Trail.

Even without all of those cool stops, the drive itself – with all its turns, one lane bridges, sea and jungle views, cliffs, roadside fruit and food stands – would have been worth the drive alone. We were not bored for one minute of the three hour drive (each way)!

We used this app, which was like a tour guide and was super helpful:
