I can’t believe they convinced me to do that hike. That was a first for all of us. Kaito said it was only going to be a 30 minute hike but it turned into 3 hours! You can imagine I was not a happy camper. Did I mention I’m a mosquito magnet?
Most people don’t complete the entire Road to Hana because it takes so long. Especially if you’re stopping a lot to sight see and hike around. If you plan to do the entire trip, plan for it being the whole day. We got to Hana at about 10am and after the hike and everything, we didn’t get back to our AirBnB in Kihei until about 6pm. There’s also very few places along the way to pick up food so prepare yourselves. Make sure you have enough water in snacks in the car.
Last tip for today. There are 2 ways to get out of there. You can either, TURN AROUND and just go back down the mountain, or keep driving and make your way completely around. If you’re not a great driver or are afraid of heights, I recommend you just TURN AROUND and go back down the way you came up.
The back way is very narrow and right next to the cliff. There are no guard rails to keep you from falling off the mountain. There are also cars coming at you from the opposite direction on a road that only has enough room for one car.
We were in a rush back so we ended up taking the back roads which although was faster, was one of the scariest drives I’ve ever been on.
