Maui Hawaii Volcano Hike: Haleakala Crater

By September 22, 2020 13 Comments

I know many are familiar with the beaches of Maui, but did you know there is a dormant shield volcano too? Making up about 75% of the island this beauty is definitely an eye catcher. There are many hikes on the islands of Hawaii, but the Haleakala Crater hike is a favorite. This is a shorter hike at around 1 hour and 30 minutes total, but there are more trails to explore if you wish to keep going. It takes around an hour each way from the base to summit and back down. This is a National Park and there is an admittance fee of $30 which is good for 3 days at any other entrance areas on the island. There are also yearly passes available.

*At the time of our hike, tourism was mostly closed on Maui, this area does have higher traffic during high travel season. You have to reserve a pass ahead if you go for sunrise.

**As always, this is a very sacred place and the utmost care should be given by staying on the paths and leaving things as you found them.
