It’s a rugged and strenuous 5-mile hike from Maalaea to Ukumehame.
This is an out-and-back hike with trailheads on either end. Both trailheads are close to sea level and the trail climaxes at 1600 ft. in about 2.5 miles, then descend back toward the sea for another 2.5 miles.
The Pali Trail is rocky, and the uphill portions can be really tough and slow-going. It will take a person in good physical condition about 3.5 hours one-way. Plan on it taking longer if you are not in excellent condition. It s a tough hike for sure.
Be sure you wear the appropriate footwear and you absolutely must bring plenty of water. There is NO SHADE on the Lahaina Pali Trail if you start at the Maalaea side. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
